Marj Steinfeld, PhD

Marj has been a licensed clinical psychologist for over 30 years, with 22 of those years in her private practice.  Her expertise lies in the areas of adolescent and adult psychotherapy, focusing on with individuals, couples both hetero and homosexual, and parent-child relationships.  She works with people suffering with emotional distress ranging from anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and relationship issues, including marriage, divorce, life transitions, partner loss, and sexual conflicts.  She also specializes in working with women in abusive relationships, those who suffer from low self-esteem, helping parents understand their children’s development and communicate with them better, and improving communication between couples.

Marj works closely with the court system to provide psychological assessments in parent monitoring in custody cases and is often asked to testify.  Besides being trained in hypnotherapy, she is also skilled in marriage and family counseling.  In addition to her private practice, Marj implements a journal writing seminar for seniors involving group process dynamics at a local hospital which won a National Award from the Catalyst Institute representing hundreds of hospitals, given for creative programming within community hospitals outreach program.  She also presents seminars on enhancing communication through understanding gender differences more fully, and is a group facilitator for caregivers.

She has authored numerous articles in text books, both professional and educational as well as in popular magazines.  Many publications have often quoted her on subjects relating to parenting, developmental childhood issues and information from her dissertation regarding the use of humor in the family system.

In the past, Marj has counseled patients at Willowbrook Ministries and at Park East Psychological Associates as a Staff Therapist, served as a supervisor on the Farleigh Dickenson University Doctoral Program, and was Staff Psychologist at The Lenox School in New York City.

Her first degree was in Child Psychology and Development from Tufts University in 1960, received her Masters in Counseling Psychology from Seton Hall, and was awarded her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara.  She is heavily involved in continuing education, focusing on trauma issues, conflict resolution, family issues, and bipolar disorders.  Marj has developed and facilitated numerous workshops and seminars covering not only these topics, but also elderly care, mastectomy patient support, parenting and role development, and use of humor in coping and recovery.
